Heavy Rain in Uvira and Covid-19
Although the world is reeling from the impact of COVID-19, other catastrophes are continuing to strike as well. Last night the territory of Uvira, within the province of South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was devastated by massive river flooding brought about by torrential mountain rains. Uvira is home to most of the women supported by the Vermont Ibutwa Initiative, and who are survivors of rape and sexual violence in an area that has been called the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman.
Several of our clients are now homeless and some have not been located. This is a challenging time for the world. And yet, many of us are still able to work from the safety of our homes, and some of us have just received financial support from the US government.
If you are able to, please consider donating 1% or more of the $1200 support that the US government is sending to many of its citizens, as a way of supporting these women surviving in the face of these incredible challenges. Your secure tax deductible donation can be made here (https://www.ibutwa.org/donate)
